This elegant six story upper west side townhouse was inspired by different states of water. From a calm pool with floating deck at the penthouse level to more atmospheric terraces evoking the experience of being in a waterfall, rapids, tidepools. The landscape at the garden level evokes the reflections and magical quality of light underwater in a swimming pool.
The residence includes design of balconies off bedrooms and office space, backyard and penthouse gardens. At the lowest level a backyard garden includes elements that extend the datum of the kitchen counters with a grill and prep area. The garden also features a fireplace framed by laser cut stainless steel panels, with adjacent seating area. Moss, ivy, and bamboo plantings provide lush greenery against the hardscape palette of rich graphite black lace phillet stone, crushed gravel, stainless steel, and ipe.
Four small terraces provide opportunities for individual respite for the client and their three children. Each terrace relates to the interior finishes and art within adjacent spaces. Gardens with rugosa and spray roses flank a penthouse level entertainment area. The northern garden is more intimate with seating and taller plantings. The southern garden contains outdoor lounge area with custom shade structure to block out the suns glare. Both gardens feature lush plantings and glass railing that simulates water spilling over the edge of the parapet.
