Staten Island, NY
As part of the Mayor’s 2014 Community Parks Initiative, DLANDstudio was selected to design the reconstruction of Arrochar Playground in Staten Island, NY. Because the playground has received less than $250,000 in capital investments over the last 20 years, it has fallen into a general state of disrepair. DLANDstudio led the public scoping process that helped clarify the needs of the communities and stakeholders around the playground.
The design seeks to create a more diverse and functional active area adjacent to the school which is currently defined by a large asphalt ball field that is in poor condition. The new active areas will include a track, basketball courts, passive shaded areas, and a synthetic turf field that manages stormwater runoff. Additionally, new play equipment and amenities, such as a spray shower, will be installed in the lower terrace area to provide play spaces for children of all ages.
Additional project funding is provided by NYCDEP for the redesigned playground to manage the stormwater runoff on site through various green infrastructure practices.
